4 Tips for Finding a Dentist you are Comfortable With

Finding a dentist that you’re comfortable with can take some time.  Of course you’re going to check out that they offer all the dental care services your family needs or may want. Whether it’s sedation for family members with anxiety or cosmetic services to help you get that smile you’ve always wanted. Here are some easy tips to make the process faster and easier!

    1. When finding a dentist, make sure that their office hours are convenient for you.

For example, your work or school schedule might make it difficult to see a dentist who only works during the daytime Monday through Friday.  If that’s the case, be sure to look for a dental practice that is open on weekends.

It’s also good if your dentist offers appointments during the week, however.  This can come in handy if you have a day off work!

    2. Visit the office to check it out before making a commitment.

Visit the office and confirm whether or not it’s kept clean, is a professional-looking environment, and is convenient for you to get to.

You’ll be dealing with the staff at the front desk a lot, so make sure that you feel comfortable with them and that they are willing to answer your questions.  Be sure to find out about their appointment booking and billing procedures too, so you know what to expect ahead of time.

Do you live in Oakville, Burlington, Milton or an area near our Old Bronte Road & Dundas office in Oakville? If so, our dentists are truly empathetic to your dental anxiety and can help make your experience very comfortable (including sedation for common procedures).

    3. Ask to meet the dentist.

Look for a dentist who makes you feel comfortable, and will take their time with you during appointments.  If you have children, make sure that the dentist is good with them, and knows how to handle their quirks.  Some people prefer a female dentist, and if you do, that’s what you should choose.  Your comfort is what matters most, after all!

Additionally, any dentist that you are considering should be open about their training and qualifications.  If you need to find out more about the reputation of your dentist, contact your local dental association.

    4. When finding a dentist, ensure that they are willing and able to explain any procedures that you may require.

Some people just aren’t very good at explaining things, and if that person is your dentist, that can lead to stress for you as you worry about what they’re going to do and why.  Any dentist that you choose should be able to explain the procedures that you’ll be undergoing in a way that’s easy to understand, tell you why it’s necessary, and break down the costs.

Speaking of costs, it is a plus if they direct bill your insurance plan!

It’s Worth Taking the Time to find Your Dentist

Finding a dentist that you’re comfortable with is one of the most important things that you can do for your dental health.  Be sure to stick to your guns, and hold out until you’ve truly found the one that will be best for you.  If you prefer a female dentist, then that’s what you ought to choose.  If you want or need the flexibility of a dentist who offers appointments during the weekends, be sure to inquire about that before making a commitment.   By the time you go through this process, you’ll be glad to know that you have a good partner on your side who will help you to preserve the health of your teeth and gums for many years!
